Thurston County to hear comments on removing animal licensing fees from county code

Pet licensing to be mandated through ordinance

Posted

Thurston’s Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) set a public hearing for animal control related fees on June 4 to amend Thurston County Municipal Code (TMC) Section 9.10 (Animal Control).

The chapter on animal control regulates the keeping of animals within the county's unincorporated areas and sets its corresponding licensing and registration fees.

The public hearing will authorize the BoCC to set animal licensing and registration fees through a resolution.

Since 1996, the county has partnered with cities in a regional partnership to address animal control in Thurston County. Commissioners have set cat and dog licensing and other fees in the county code.

The Thurston County Animal Licensing fees are currently inconsistent with the surrounding jurisdictions and it is difficult to amend the mandates as they are in the county code.

“To facilitate keeping the fees in alignment, staff are proposing that we take the fees out of County Code and instead enable the board to set the fees by a resolution,” said Assistant County Manager Robin Campbell.

After the public hearing on June 4, if the board deems it in the public interest to amend the code, they may accept the amendment of the animal licensing fees scheduled to be enforced starting January 1, 2025.

The Board of County Commissioners set a public hearing on June 4 to collect comments on removing animal licensing fees from the country code at a meeting yesterday, May 7, 2024.

"The Thurston County Animal Licensing fees are currently inconsistent with the surrounding jurisdictions and it is difficult to amend the mandates as they are in the county code."

How are they inconsistent with the other jurisdictions? Is it the cost? The article would be clearer if we knew that.
