A 31-year-old transient was arrested after allegedly beating his 17-year-old girlfriend at the Ensign Road homeless encampment last Thursday.

Zacharey Hanley, 31, was allegedly witnessed grabbing his underaged girlfriend by the throat by their parked recreation vehicle on May 13.

When Olympia Police contacted Hanley, they noted that he was bleeding from his right eye.

Police say Ronald Mcaboy, 31, who lives in the Ensign Rd NE encampment, witnessed Hanley allegedly choking his girlfriend and yelled at Hanley to release her. Hanley pushed his victim into the street, advancing on Mcaboy, “swinging” wildly. Mcaboy punched Hanley in the face.

A short time later, Hanley had picked up a river rock and came at Mcaboy with an aggressive manner, and hit Mcaboy with the rock in the face and arm. Mcaboy punched Hanley in the face again in self-defense. The blood coming from Hanley’s right eye came from his falling onto the ground.

Hanley told Officers that he didn’t know how the wound above his right eye occurred, and that nothing had happened between him and Mcaboy or the girl.

Of Hanley’s girlfriend, Mcaboy told police: “That’s an abused woman. She needs help.”

A second witness, Charlie Wagner, 29, said that he and Mcaboy told Hanley to stop hurting his girlfriend, and that Hanley got between the two men and his girlfriend, “as if he was blocking her avenue of escape.” Wagner told officers that Hanley begged his girlfriend to stay with him, using “pet names” and “baby talking her.”

Wagner told police: “Every time he tried to put his hands up to hug her or touch her, she would flinch and crunch down a little.”

When Olympia Police arrived, separating Hanley from the alleged victim, she continually asked police if he “could see her” [talking with them] because she was scared to talk to law enforcement due to Hanley’s possible outstanding warrants.

The victim began “sobbing” and “shaking” saying that she and Hanley had been dating for a year. She told officers that Hanley had “put his arm around my neck” and then later “hit my head on a pole” while identifying a metal bench in front of South Sound Radiology. Officers noted and asked about several healed scars on the victim’s arms, including a healed burn scar, which the victim alleged came from Hanley in previous incidents. She refused to provide a written statement.

Hanley was arrested and booked into Olympia Jail for misdemeanor assault.
