An allegedly intoxicated driver collided with a downtown traffic median and attempted to flee, only to be prevented by witnesses and a quick response time by law enforcement last Saturday.

Olympia police contacted Josiah Sweeney, 29, as he sat in his Ford Mustang on 4th Ave W, stuck in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes on June 12, 2021 at 11:41 p.m.

Several witnesses at the scene told police that Sweeney was driving at a high rate of speed, 40-50 mph) the wrong way on 4th Avenue, hitting the median at 4th Ave W and Water St, then hitting the second median at 4th Ave W and Sylvester St.

One witness took the keys out of the vehicle, preventing Sweeney from driving away.

Sweeney told OPD that he had been told to leave the 4th Ave Tavern by the staff. He attempted to do the field sobriety tests but failed. According to the police report, Sweeney attempted to do the breath analyzer tests in the field but failed to do so properly five times.

On the Draeger breathalyzer at the Olympia jail, Sweeney blew a 0.214.

After he was arrested and booked for driving under the influence, Sweeney asked a police officer, “so, you’re not giving me a ride home?”
