An update on the 2020 census

Posted

Thurston County is currently ranked third in the state for response to the 2020 Census, with a response rate of 73.4 percent. Clark County is leading the state with 74.4 percent, and King County is close behind with 74.3 percent. If you have not responded to the 2020 Census, you can respond through Wednesday, Sept. 30, by visiting my2020census.gov or calling 844-330-2020. The Census Bureau recently announced it will complete the data collection phase of the census on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in order to meet its statutory deadline to deliver the results of the 2020 Census by Thursday, Dec. 31.

To facilitate a complete count, the Census Bureau will conduct

  • Telephone Follow-Ups: The bureau will supplement its in-person follow-up phase with phone calls to some non-responding households. If voicemail is available, a message will be left asking the household to call one of the call centers.
  • Notice of Visits: A “Notice of Visit” message will be left at residences if no one is home; they will include information about how to respond online, by phone, or by mail.
  • Seventh Mailing: A seventh mailer – which will include a paper questionnaire – will be sent to non-responding households in the lowest-responding census tracts beginning in late August.

Email Reminders: More than 20 million households in low-responding areas will receive an email reminder. Emails will be sent to all households in census block groups with a response rate of lower than 50 percent; this may result in households that have already responded receiving an email.
