A Thurston County man was arrested after allegedly pointing a gun and hurling racial slurs at another individual over a parking spot and later giving chase to police, eventually crashing into police vehicles and injuring an officer.

Olympia police say Andrew Dwyte McCann, 39, was arrested on Nov. 25 after a reported disturbance involving a gun at the St. Peter Hospital parking lot.

The reporting party said that after he parked his vehicle, the suspect, later identified as McCann, honked at him from his truck and said, “I hope you have good insurance. I`m going to chain up your car and pull it out of the spot” and “Go back to China, you Asian motherf*cker.”

When he stepped toward McCann after hearing the racial insult, the man said the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at him, saying, “Yeah you better step away, I’m going to shoot,” before driving away.

An unrelated witness also said she saw McCann point a gun from the window of his vehicle.

Police later located McCann at a gas station with a companion. A responding police officer said McCann disobeyed orders and sped away with the gas nozzle still attached to his vehicle, while his companion complied with authorities.

When the chase reached Pacific Avenue, one officer said he decided to carry out a maneuver aimed at stopping the suspect’s vehicle.

The maneuver failed to halt McCann’s truck and the officer was preparing to try again when he saw the suspect’s vehicle coming straight toward him, leading to a collision that caused bodily injury to both parties. The officer said it was unclear whether McCann intended the collision.

After the crash, the suspect exited his vehicle and ran away in the opposite direction, according to the police report.

An officer managed to take down McCann and immediately handcuffed him

The suspect was booked at the Thurston County Jail for second-degree assault, malicious harassment, vehicular assault, eluding a police vehicle, and third-degree malicious mischief.
