A man is accused of stealing more than  $400 worth of merchandise, carrying out the items in a giant dufflebag, only to be released at the scene last Thursday.

Reed McCarty, 33, of Puyallup, was witnessed just before 7 p.m. on May 27 by Fred Meyer loss prevention at the Trosper Road store, exiting the premises with unpaid merchandise in a large dufflebag.

The dufflebag included several clothing items with tags still on them, unopened packages of batteries, candles and a pair of shoes, sewing materials and several packs of reusable straws.

Fred Meyer loss prevention also had security camera footage of McCarty removing the items and stuffing them in the bag, walking through the exit doors.

Tumwater police say McCarty admitted to the theft after he was advised of his Miranda Rights.

McCarty was given a criminal citation for theft. He signed a trespass warning from Fred Meyer and the City of Tumwater, and was released at the scene.
