Carolina Mejia, C Davis take Top 2 spots in primary for Thurston County Commission District 1

Posted

THURSTON COUNTY –– As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, candidate Carolina Mejia was in the lead for the Thurston County Board of Commissioners seat for District #1, which encompasses central Thurston County. She held 30.78 percent of the vote, or 4,525 votes, as of just after 8 p.m.

While the commissioner-elect has no listed prior experience in elected office, she stated in the Thurston County Voter’s Pamphlet that she has a background in law and finance, most recently working as a judicial assistant for the Thurston County Superior Court.

The former business administration major from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee also contributes time to community service organizations, according to the voters pamphlet. She’s the treasurer of the Latino Caucus, and holds memberships in the Thurston County Democrats and Thurston County Women Democrats.

Ensuring affordable housing and advocating for stronger environmental protections are two of Mejia’s main priorities now that she’s won the seat, and more responsibly spend taxpayer dollars, she said in the voters pamphlet.

“The issues affecting our county are complex and they need to be addressed holistically and approached with long-term solutions in mind,” Mejia said in the pamphlet. “These solutions may be challenging, however with support and determination, they can be achieved.”

Some of Mejia’s priorities include protecting water sources, state parks and wetlands, while balancing environmental considerations with allowing communities to grow. Reducing the county’s carbon footprint and limiting greenhouse gas emission also are high on the newly-elected commissioner’s to-do list.

C Davis comes in right behind Mejia with 18.45 percent of the vote. The neighborhood association treasurer  said in the Thurston County Voters Pamphlet that he has 23 years of experience in Information Technology and is owner of two stores, among other business ventures.

"Over 27 years, I've watched crime skyrocket, fueled by drug abuse and enabled by weak leaders," Davis said in the pamphlet. "I have seen taxes and fees rise to an unsustainable level such that senior citizens, the disabled and the struggling young can no longer afford to keep or buy a home."

The longtime county resident also wants to streamline building permits, eliminate homeless camps to preserve the environment and stands firmly against building a new county courthouse, stating it would cause a massive tax burden on working citizens.

"It is unnecessary," he wrote in the pamphlet. "We must fix the existing courthouse and maintain it properly."
