Carstens sets 2 school records at Husky Classic

Posted

It was another weekend of business for All-American awardee Alauna Carstens, as she smashed The Evergreen State College’s records in the women’s indoor 3,000-meter and mile runs at the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington (UW) at Dempsey Indoor on Feb. 14-15.

Carstens posted Evergreen's school record in the 3,000-meter run with a personal best of 9:40.70 on Day 1 of the event, placing second in her heat.

Her time is the second best in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) so far this year and is an improvement from her 9:44.54 time just two weeks ago at the UW Invite.

Joining Carstens in representing the Geoducks on the first day of the meet was Corona Parker, who competed in the high jump. She cleared 1.60 meters in her second and final successful attempt, which was just below her personal best of 1.61m.

On Day 2, Carstens broke another school record, this time in the women’s mile run as she finished the distance in under five minutes.

Her time of 4:57.58 was not only good for breaking her own school record, but also good for another NAIA “A” standard qualifying time for the event.

This is another addition to her national qualifying standards, as she has previously qualified for this year's NAIA Indoor Championships in the 3,000-meter run and the 5,000-meter run.

"We are very excited," said Evergreen track & field head coach Joel Pearson. "These were incredible performances for Alauna with the 3K on Friday and the mile on Saturday."

Carstens, along with Izabelle Trefts in the 3,000-meter racewalk, will represent the Geoducks in the NAIA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held in Gainesville, Florida, from Feb. 27 up to March 1.
