City of Tumwater set to adopt a new logo

Current logo dates from 1983 and was called 'outdated' by city staff

The Tumwater City Council reviewed a new logo last week and is set to vote on its adoption at tomorrow's meeting, set to start at 7 p.m.

The current logo was adopted in 1983, according to a memo dated tomorrow in the packet prepared for the meeting. City Communications Manager Ann Cook writes that the current logo "features an image that is historic in its design motif and style with a narrow  interpretation of the culture and history of our community as it is seen today."

Cook said that staff reviewed logos from various cities around Western Washington to ensure that the new graphic would be "uniquely recognizable." Incorporating elements from the historic brewery tower and Tumwater Falls, the new logo would also include new branding colors for the city.

The council will be invited to either retain the current logo, approve the art as presented, or revise the proposed concept.

The cost to complete the design work associated with the new logo is $5,000, according to Cook, and "are covered in the current Executive Department budget." Other costs will be included with city projects "at minimal new cost," according to Cook's proposal.

The city council meeting and agenda highlights and Zoom registration information are included in The JOLT's Community Calendar

"City Communications Manager Ann Cook writes that the current logo 'features an image that is historic in its design motif and style with a narrow interpretation of the culture and history of our community as it is seen today.'"

This translates into "the current logo isn't politically correct."

Eliminate the wholesome hardworking family logo. Replace it with an abandoned brewery over what could be a sewage outfall or some other flood scenario. Yes -- alcohol, obsolescence and abandonment over weird unidentifiable frothy maybe-water sends forth an excellent city image. NOT.

Since 3.3 million acres are in the process to be warehouses, with the potential of more to come, perhaps the logo for the future Tumwater be a warehouse.

Ah, yes. An abandoned building, home only to vagrants, at the base is the flood waters after the city has warehoused or paved over every bit of soil...the only thing they forgot was the roundabouts.
