City officials to discuss sea level rise this week

Posted

OLYMPIA –– In response to concerns over the rising sea levels across the globe and on Puget Sound, members of the Olympia Land Use & Environment Committee will talk about local solutions to rising sea levels in a Thursday meeting this week.

Efforts to address sea level rise on a local level started in 2017 with the coming together of officials with the city and the Port of Olympia, as well as the LOTT Clean Water Alliance. The group formed an agreement that formed the Olympia Sea Level Rise Response Plan, which aims to keep flooding from occurring in downtown Olympia.

The plan, which was adopted last year, includes information about the most recent climate science, elements about what leaves the city most vulnerable to flooding, financial cost of flood prevention and implementation, among other things.

The only noted source of funding to implement elements of the Olympia Sea Level Rise Response Plan comes from the city’s Storm and Surface Water utility capital budget, which allots $125,000 towards the plan.

The Land Use & Environment Committee is meeting virtually on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. For more information about the meeting, visit the City of Olympia’s meetings calendar and click on the agenda for the Aug. 20 meeting.
