Evergreen soccer teams record two huge wins over Walla Walla in doubleheader weekend

Posted

The Evergreen State College soccer teams hosted a doubleheader feature last Sunday, October 20. Both the Geoduck teams faced the Walla Walla University soccer squads, and they made it a memorable treat for their home fans.

In the first feature of the event at 12:30 p.m. kickoff, the Geoduck women’s team thrashed the visiting Wolves in a 9-1 humiliation, which featured a 7-0 halftime score.

The men followed up by obliterating their Walla Walla counterparts 8-0, with four goals scored per half.

This was the first time this season that both Geoduck squads won in the double header schedule, and they did so in immense fashion, recording their largest margin wins as per modern records in Cascade Collegiate Conference history.

This was just the women’s second win of the season after their maiden win last weekend against Bushnell, while the men recorded their third win.

Both teams will travel to Montana this week to face the University of Providence on Friday, October 25, and Caroll College the following day.

Evergreen State’s Kolby Juarez scored two goals and provided two assists in the Geoducks’s massive 8-0 home victory over the Walla Walla Wolves.

 Women’s Soccer: Evergreen 9, Walla Walla 1

The Geoducks opened the Sunday double feature in a non-conference match with a frantic 9-1 win over the visiting Wolves. Nine goals from eight different goal-scorers in a mismatch of sorts pumped some needed morale for the hosts, who still currently sit bottom of the CCC table.

Peyton Rhyne, their most reliable scorer while curiously playing as a full-back, scored twice. At the same time, midfielder Danean Wurlitzer orchestrated three assists in a match in which the hosts found themselves leading 7-0 at halftime.

Rhyne opened the scoring about a minute after kickoff, heading a corner delivered by Wurlitzer to get the early advantage.

A quick run of three goals followed in less than ten minutes. Another Wurlitzer corner kick in the sixth minute was converted to a goal by Emma Stock in her first goal this season, and then in the tenth, Cayla Muenchow scored her first of the season from an assist delivered by Rhyne. Alexandra Foley completed this run after slamming the ball to the net to make it 4-0 in less than 15 minutes of action.

The goalscoring blitz continued as Rhyne got her second goal of the match in the 18th minute.

Just 30 seconds later, Brieanna Dell took over with her fourth goal this season, and the hosts found themselves leading 6-0 in the opening 20 minutes.

Finley Gimelli Hemme sent Evergreen to seventh heaven with her first goal of the season in the 33rd minute, making it 7-0 right before halftime.

This humungous lead gave Evergreen head coach Kate Green the chance to rotate her players in the second half, but the Geoducks are still catching on hot form. The scoring continued in the 48th minute with Chloe Dolman scoring, while freshman midfielder Angela Celedon delivered a free kick from 25 yards out to seal it shut at 9-0 just above 50 minutes.

The Geoducks then turned their gears down, but perhaps they relaxed too soon as they conceded from an error in the midfield capitalized by Walla Walla goalscorer Maria Bass in the 86th minute.

Evergreen had 31 shots in total with 17 hits on target in this big win.

Men’s Soccer: Evergreen 8, Walla Walla 0

The first one was so nice, they had to do it twice.

As if an eight-goal beatdown is not enough, the men’s Evergreen State College team doubled the favor with another eight-goal battering of Walla Walla 8-0 from five different goalscorers.

Three Geoducks have two goals in their name as Kolby Juarez, Juan Mendez, and Sage Scheuerell scored a brace each, with Juarez also having two assists all in the first half, while Manny Nicasio added to the tally with one goal and two assists, and rookie Kevin Jimenez finished the job with a goal of his own.

Evergreen’s man between the gates, Brandon Gribek, had the shutout, and his five saves were crucial in keeping the clean sheet.

Juarez scored his two goals in under 23 minutes. He scored the first goal for Evergreen just above six minutes of play and added another goal as he beat the goalkeeper for his fourth goal of the season.

Mendez scored his first goal of the match, with Juarez providing the assist in the 27th minute. Juarez, the man of the half, provided another assist, this time to Manny Nicasio, for his sixth goal of the season, ending the half with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Scheuerell opened the second half on fire, scoring two goals in quick succession in the 64th and 69th minutes. His second goal completed a textbook counter-attack.

Mendez hit his second goal of the match in the 76th minute, the easiest tap-in at six yards out inside the box. The rain of goals stopped at the 83rd minute. Similar to the earlier women’s game, a freshman had the final goal of the match, with Kevin Jimenez scoring his first for the Geoducks.

Evergreen had 21 shots in total, 13 of which were on target, in this huge win. 14 of the 21 shots came in the first half alone.
