Exercise equipment might be coming to Olympia parks

Posted

OLYMPIA –– City officials will talk on Thursday night about how best to meet the needs of the city’s residents, with plans to discuss installing outdoor exercise equipment in public parks for visitors to use while COVID-19 restrictions are in effect.

The city’s parks and recreation advisory committee will meet in a virtual meeting to address these growing needs, especially considering that businesses like gyms and sports facilities remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to documents with information about the effort, several businesses sell outdoor recreation equipment that can be used for adult exercise and fitness. The equipment can be installed in parks and outdoor spaces, and can be used for strength training and aerobic exercise. Any equipment installed in Olympia’s parks would be the first equipment of its kind to be installed in a city park here.

The discussion will also include expanding fitness and exercise programs hosted or organized by the city, including more virtual or online fitness classes and fitness programs in local parks. The Olympia Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting will be held virtually on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. For more information about the meeting or to register to attend, go to the city’s meetings calendar page and click on the agenda for the Aug. 20 Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting.
