Get your car security firmware upgraded, says Lacey Police

Car thefts rising with release of social media posts teaching how to jack cars

In response to a reel in Tiktok and other social media platforms that show how to jump-start cars for theft, Lacey Police Department has encouraged vehicle owners to avail of software upgrades offered by car manufacturers to avoid their cars being stolen.

In a post on their Facebook account, Lacey Police revealed that social media posts that teach how to start vehicles without push-button ignition and disable their anti-theft features has increased car thefts.

Car makers Kia and Hyundai have already offered free anti-theft software updates on certain models of their cars, with Lacey Police providing links.

“Kia has already started notifying owners about this free software upgrade and anticipates making it available to most owners of affected vehicles over the next few months,” said Lacey Police in a post.

Meanwhile, Hyundai is also offering security software upgrades available from Hyundai dealers.

“Following completion of the upgrade, each vehicle will be affixed with window decals to alert would-be thieves that the vehicle is equipped with enhanced anti-theft technology,” Lacey Police said.

Lacey Police provided the Hyundai upgrade service campaign schedule detailing the models that will be serviced:
