Hatchett’s career high powers Saint Martin's to victory over Simon Fraser

Saint Martin’s Mya Hatchett was on her game, as the junior guard came off the bench to post a career high 19 points in 24 minutes to help the Saints to an 86-74 win over Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on Feb. 1.

Hatchett played her best game so far in a Saints jersey, as she tallied more than 20 minutes of play for the first time this season. She hit five of eight field goals and was eight of her 10 free throws.

Down 50-34 at halftime, the Saints opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run behind the hot shooting of Keeli Jade Smith and Jada Travis.

The Saints followed it up with a 13-4 run with Hatchett leading the way, before widening the gap at the expense of the Red Leafs.

"This was a big game that we needed to have. I could not be more proud of the fight and response from this group,” said Saints head coach Natalie Marlowe on the comeback mounted by the team.

“This was a full team effort, and when we share the ball, we're a very tough team."

The Saints got off to a good start as Travis and Smith led the starters in scoring, while Hatchett and Sabrina Lopez provided support off the bench.

The Saints led 20-11 with three minutes left in the opening quarter before the hosts, led by Sophia Wisotzki, cut the lead to 22-21 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter was almost all Simon Fraser, as Wisotzki, along with help from Makenna Gardner and Rachel Loukes, limited the Saints to 12 points to end the half with a 16-point advantage.

But the Saints were able to make a comeback of their own in the second half.

The game was tied as the end of the third quarter, but the Saints outscored the Red Leafs by 12 in the final quarter to win the game.

Apart from Hatchett, three other Saints scored in double digits.

Travis had 16 points, while Kiana Ross had 16 points and eight rebound and Avery Oaster put up 15 points and nine boards. Wistozki led the Red Leafs with 26 points.

The Saints improved to a 5-7.
