LACEY –– North Thurston Education Foundation (NTEF) awarded scholarships this week to several graduating high school students in the area totalling $136,000 between 41 students.

“It was a challenging year for the Class of 2020 in many respects,” said Cathy Callahan, chair of the scholarship foundation, in a press release. “Due to the high quality of the 52 applications the foundation received, the selection process was difficult. The scholarship committee was pleased to award scholarships to 41 students who will be attending community colleges and colleges and universities across the country.”

The organization offered scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 and students were awarded the scholarships based on academic achievement, school and community activities, references, essay quality and financial need. Of the scholarships offered, 16 are named after members of the community and funded by money bequests from those individuals or from people making a donation in their honor. The others, NTEF noted in a press release, are funded by the organization’s own fundraising efforts and from a grant from the Dawkins Charitable Trust.

The students to receive scholarships this year from the NTEF included Thomas Arend, Lochla Glass, Samantha Harding, Nia Harris, Payton Huss, Hayden Kosmider, Daniella LeBlanc-Debruler, Jacob Olson, Carianna Plascencia, Kyle Shimabukuro, McKenzie Squires, Madison Vu and Emma Waldon from North Thurston High School. Timberline High School had 21 students to be awarded scholarships, including Maria Jelaine Barretto, McKenzie Bowers, Arianna Bush, Elyanna Calle, Morgan Cromartie, Jada Daniels, Lauryn Daniels, Alexander Dimico, Riley Gonzalez, Madison Hamilton, An Ho, Jasmine Matchawate, Jordan Moldenhauer, Collin Moore, Mackenzie Phan, Isaac Quiocho, Michael Rogers, Ian Teodoro, Isaiah Utto-Galarneau, Dominique Wolfe and Grace Zhang.

River Ridge High School students were awarded NTEF scholarships as well, including Bridgette Byerly, Willa Eisel, Jacie Fabela, Eli Francom, Madison Mercado, Julian Ruatos and Samuel Taylor.

North Thurston Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial support to local students from low-income families. This support not only results in the organizations’ scholarship program, but also assists students with student assistance funds that help to meet needs other public funds don’t help with. More than 1,000 students experiencing homelessness benefit from NTEF’s help, according to a press release from the organization, as do local teachers who use NTEF dollars for classroom projects.
