Join Tobias Gurl in supporting The Lamplighters - Zoom lesson on how to recreate his signature fractal style

The Lamplighters, an Olympia incubator and studio for artists of all kinds, has been among the arts organizations hardest hit by the pandemic. Established at the end of 2019, it's too new to qualify for most small business aid, and its major draw - a cozy community learning environment - is a no-go during quarantine.

In spite of all obstacles, Lamplighters has held on for a full year through its sales and clever online class model, but its right-business-at-an-unlucky-time rent is finally catching up.

One artist is hoping others will follow his lead by pitching in to save the space. Tobias Gurl, a mixed media artist who started his business in Olympia, will be hosting a Zoom lesson on how to recreate his signature fractal style, with all admission proceeds going straight to helping the Lamplighters keep their lights on. "Having a supportive community was essential for building my self-confidence as an artist," says Gurl, who credits Olympia staples like Enterprise for Equity and Gallery Boom with his success. "If we allow our art spaces to disappear during the pandemic, we'll regret it later. I'm donating my time and proceeds to Lamplighters because post-pandemic we'll need the arts more than ever."

Gurl's work has appeared in Gallery Boom, the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation, Olyphant Art and Media, Capitol Florist, and Splash Gallery of Olympia, among other locations around Puget Sound. The Stranger highlighted his Arts Walk show at Ritual in Seattle, praising his "quirky details."

You can view more of Gurl's fractal art on Instagram @luxurybonesart, or by visiting The Lamplighters in person at 211 4th Ave E, Olympia WA. To RSVP for Gurl's class, visit olylamplighters.com/gallery/fractalcard/. Class will be on February 26th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Admission is $15.
