The Lacey City Council awarded KMB Architects the contract for initial design services of the new police station project at its meeting last Thursday, April 21.
Lacey Capital Projects Engineer Ashley Smith said the contract, amounting to $658,474, only includes the schematic or initial design, which makes up 30% of the whole project design.
"[The 30%] is to vet the facility's feasibility overall and come up with realistic cost estimates as we move forward towards funding the project," Smith said.
Smith said five firms submitted statements of qualification to the city staff.
KMB Architects also handled the facility master plan and space needs analysis for the project’s initial study from 2019 to 2020.
"It makes sense [because] they have done the prior work on this project," Lacey Andy Ryder said.
The new police station is one of the city council's priority projects. In March, the city council unanimously voted to approve the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Martin's to purchase its 11.96-acre property for the appraised price of $4,040,000 to accommodate the project site.
In previous council meetings, Smith reported that the existing 40-year-old police station is inadequate for current and future needs.
Smith said they also looked into just renovating the existing facility but determined that it would cost more and cause disruption of police services during the construction.
