The Washington State Department of Commerce, Thurston County, and the City of Lacey held two public forums on a supportive housing acquisition project in the afternoon and evening on Wednesday, November 16.
The departments are set to partner with the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) in transforming a hotel into an enhanced shelter.
“Back in May of this year, the governor’s office directed the initiative to start addressing homeless encampments in the state right-of-ways, particularly the I-5. And that is a state-wide effort focusing on certain counties,” Lacey Director of Community and Economic Development Rick Walk mentioned.
The hotel, formerly Days Inn, and located at 8200 Quinault Drive NE, will be converted to housing that would provide heated units, safety, and community for citizens currently living unsheltered in the region.
“With this initiative, the goal was to quickly move people out of the prioritized state right-of-ways and into better living situations,” Walk added.
Washington State developed a financial package to help develop and bring more resources; Walk emphasized that it is not just a hotel acquisition project in Lacey, but a regional effort.
