The Lacey City Council unanimously voted to designate a portion of Franz Street as a memorial roadway honoring the distinguished 20-year career of Lacey Fire Department Chief Steve Brooks.
The decision, which was made at the city council's Tuesday, Feb. 4, meeting, recognizes the unwavering service and invaluable contributions from Brooks to the community.
“He was just a really great community leader, and still is actually, even now that he's retired," remarked Councilman Michael Steadman. "He's been an incredible community asset and did a great job as our chief."
The memorial roadway, including a portion of Franz Street between Lacey Boulevard and Pacific Avenue SE, is a lasting tribute to Brooks' legacy.
Lacey City Manager Rick Walk highlighted the chief's extensive collaboration with the city over the past years.
“We've coordinated a lot on various different topics, including how we can work together on annual fire inspections, looking at code reviews for project developments and other partnerships through that capacity with the fire district,” Walk said.
Mayor Andy Ryder, who initiated the request for the memorial designation, expressed his enthusiasm for the council's decision.
"Every time we drive by and see Chief Steve Brooks' name there, it's going to warm a lot of people's hearts over the years," Ryder said.
