Lacey mulls changing speed limits for newly annexed streets

The Lacey Transportation Committee recommended modifying the speed limit of some roadways in the city during its meeting on Tuesday, April 4.

Lacey Transportation Manager Martin Hoppe said the recommendation stems from newly annexed areas and to have more consistency within the urban area.

Changing the speed limit signs will cost approximately $5,000 for materials and labor, the committee report read.

Following the annexation of Lake Lois Pacific Avenue, Hoppe said they are recommending lowering the speed limit on Pacific Avenue from 40 mph to 35 mph while retaining the 35 mph limit on Kinwood Street and the 25 mph limit on the residential streets.

The committee also agreed to recommend lowering the speed limit on both Martin Way within Lacey and Britton Parkway from Marvin Road to about Carpenter Road to 35 mph from 40 mph.

Upon completion of the new College St NE extension in 2024, the committee is recommending setting the speed limit on the roadway from 6th Ave NE to 15th Ave NE to 35 mph, consistent with the rest of College St.

“It just feels like as we put more people, more housing on a street, it shouldn't feel like a highway,” said Councilmember and Transportation Committee member Robin Vazquez.

To finalize the recommendations, the city council must adopt a resolution in a regular council meeting.

Before doing that they need to enforce the speed limit as the majority of the traffic already go over 10 miles over the current speed limit, especially on Pacifica Ave as well as many of the other main Lacey thoroughfares!!
