New gazebo is proposed for Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls would resemble the old shingle mill

A proposed gazebo at Brewery Park in Tumwater Falls is planned to resemble an old shingle mill that used to be located at the same spot.

Tumwater’s Historic Preservation Commission, on Thursday, December 16, issued a certificate of appropriateness to the project, which is required for making any changes to a property within a historic district. The document certifies that the project does not adversely affect the historical characteristics of the property.

The gazebo would be constructed around the parking lot on C Street. It would measure 10 feet by 10 feet and be made from cedar, which Olympia Tumwater Foundation Executive Director John Freedman said matched the old mill’s history as a producer of cedar shingles.

The gazebo would also have signage containing information about the old mill and a card-only donation kiosk for Olympia Tumwater Foundation, which owns and maintains the park.

The foundation plans to spend gazebo around $17,300 to build the gazebo, and another $5,000 for the donation kiosk. Other associated costs include installing electrical connections, labor, trenching, permitting, and constructing a concrete pad.

Freedman said project costs would be reduced by a $10,000 donation from O Bee Credit Union and another $10,000 contribution from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
