Olympia proclaims April 2023 as Earth Month

Posted

The Olympia City Council, on Tuesday, April 18, signed a proclamation designating the month of April as Earth Month.

Olympia has joined Governor Jay Inslee in proclaiming the entire month to be Earth Month in Washington State to enlist all people to protect and sustain life on the planet.

"All of us, as caretakers of our planet, have an obligation to change the human behaviors that contribute to climate change and environmental degradation to preserve the Earth's beauty and resources," stated the proclamation.

"Earth Day was created 53 years ago, recognizing the importance for everyone to participate in preserving our natural resources, and on that First Earth Day, 20 million rallied for a healthy, sustainable environment," it added.

In the local scene, Olympia residents, schools, environmental organizations, and businesses have raised over 100 Earth Flags to promote environmental awareness and local activism.

Olympia's Climate Program Director Dr. Pamela Braff announced activities in honor of Earth Day and Earth Month.

Olympia Parks and Recreation is partnering with the PARC Foundation of Thurston County and the local Lions Club to host the annual Earth Day stewardship event at Squaxin Park on Saturday, April 22, from 10 am to 1 pm.

During the event, Braff said, volunteers will help remove English ivy and help plant trees. She said more than 70 volunteers have registered to participate in the activity.

I find it very hypocritical that this area proudly displays the Earth Day flag while allowing and promoting increased disrespect for our planet with the filth displayed around the area. The blatant disregard with the garbage strewn and dumped around by increased homeless populations is rampant. Why can’t these people be held accountable for this? Pick up a bag of garbage in exchange for services? Clean up your own areas. And planting trees? How about quit cutting down trees to build unoccupied warehouses that are next to homes? How is this taking care of our Earth in a responsible manner?? This area has lost it’s moral compass.
