Providence St. Peter Hospital named best in the region, third best in the state

U.S. News & World Report named Providence St. Peter Hospital as the 3rd best hospital in the state of Washington, and the top health facility in the region for the year 2021-22.

The rankings was released on Friday, July 27. In a statement, Providence Southwest Chief Executive Darin Goss said, “This recognition validates the commitment and hard work of the 5,000 Providence caregivers here in Southwest Washington.” He added that the recognition, “is a testament of the high-quality care we provide to our patients right here close to home.”

Aside from winning the top spot, Providence was also recognized for its high performance ratings in 16 specialty or procedural areas. The ratings were based on the evaluation of 4,750 hospitals nationwide. The considerations include 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions.

In a statement, Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report, explained that the ratings are necessary since it helps patients to find the right hospital to cater the type of care they need.

U.S. News & World Report recognized that Providence was able to provide 16 specialties/procedures and services which were better than the national average. The areas that Providence was recognized for includes cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology (kidney failure), neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.

For cancer care, the hospital was recognized for its colon cancer and lung cancer surgeries. In terms of cardiology, Providence showed high performance in its heart failure specialty, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, and its transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

In neurology and neurosurgery, the health facility was also recognized for its back surgery and stroke specialty. For orthopedics, Providence topped the ratings with its back surgery, knee replacement, hip replacement, and hip fracture procedure.

Its pulmonology and lung surgery also received high ratings including its lung cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia specialty.

With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Harder shared that medical facilities like Providence were still able to maintain quality services. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today,” he shared.
