Saint Martin's University announced on its website last Tuesday that Theresa Hanson has been hired as its new Interim Director of Athletics. She will replace Steve O'Brien, who passed away on August 5, 2024, due to complications from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).
Hanson will bring to Lacey her 25 years of extensive experience in sports administration, including nearly a decade supervising Canada's only NCAA Division II program at Simon Fraser University as Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation.
"Theresa Hanson is a visionary leader who understands the importance of supporting our student-athletes in all aspects of their development," said SMU President Bill Brownsberger, S.T.D. "Her focus on both athletic excellence and student well-being aligns perfectly with our Catholic Benedictine values at Saint Martin's.
Hanson's career highlights include spearheading the construction of Simon Fraser's $22 million stadium, expanding athletic endowments by 52%, and guiding the SFU athletic program through unprecedented growth in her tenure, ensuring long-term resources for student-athletes.
The new director's leadership extends beyond her institutions. She has roles on several high-level committees, including the NCAA Division II Management Council and the NCAA Athletic Directors Association Board.
Prior to her stint with the Red Leafs, she also held sports management roles as Director of Athletics, Operations, and Student-Athlete Services at the University of British Columbia and Director of Athletics and Intramurals with Langara College in Vancouver.
"I am extremely grateful to President Brownsberger for the incredible opportunity and privilege to join Saint Martin's University," said Hanson reflecting on her new role. "I am thrilled for what lies ahead and look forward to engaging with the student-athletes, coaches, staff, and Saints alumni – together we will make a positive difference and win some championships along the way!"
A native of Trail, British Columbia, Hanson played basketball at Lewis Clark State College, where she earned her bachelor's degree. As a lifelong sports advocate, she earned her master's degree in Sports Administration at the United States Sports Academy, graduating with honors.
