Shooter arrested during protest in Olympia Saturday

One person was arrested following a reported shooting at the Capital Campus Saturday afternoon, Washington State Patrol reported.

The afternoon had been filled with clashing protestors — some in support of outgoing President Donald Trump and others clad all in black — around the capital campus and downtown Olympia.

There was no available status on the victim, as of Saturday afternoon, WSP said on their social media, nor was the name of the suspect released.

The Olympia Police Department, Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and WSP were onsite as protestors clashed throughout the afternoon. OPD issued orders to disperse after declaring the protest a riot.

OPD announced on their social media that, as of 3:41 p.m., the groups dispersed.

Officials had anticipated a day of protest and counter protest after Trump supporters organized events on Saturday, marking the second weekend in a row — and the second weekend with a reported shooting — where groups engaged in violent clashes.

“While the City supports peaceful protests, the Olympia Police Department … will have a significant presence Downtown out of an abundance of caution following an armed clash last Saturday,” read a City of Olympia press release distributed Friday.
