THURSTON COUNTY, May 28, 2020 -- Several hundred supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County watched the 17th annual Foundation for the Future fundraiser live on Facebook this morning, but the online fundraising platform crashed after exactly 100 donations.

By the end of the 30-minute “virtual breakfast” event, only $124,281 of the $300,000 goal had been raised.  By 2:00 pm the donation website was restored to service and donations resumed.

The presentation featured Faith Doctor, 2020 Youth of the Year, who told her own story as well as how her involvement in the Lacey Boys & Girls Club helped her through a difficult period in her young life. A graduating senior from Timberline High School, Doctor was chosen Youth of the Year honor after a competitive process that included letters of endorsement, writing essays, meeting academic and community service requirements and presenting a speech about her experiences.  Other nominees included students from Olympia, Tumwater and Rochester.

The event was hosted by KIRO television and radio personality John Curley and featured Chief Executive Officer Chris Woods, who joined the organization last year after serving as a school principal and administrator in Olympia and Tumwater School Districts.

Dr. Anthony Agtarap, a local orthopaedic surgeon, and his wife, Christie, were presented with the Governor’s Leadership for Youth Award by Jim Clark, president of the national Boys & Girls Clubs organization.  Dr. Agtarap was a “Club Kid” growing up in Edmonds, Wash., and was involved in the formation of the Thurston County organization in 2001.  Both continue to serve in various capacities today.

The non-profit organization opened its sixth facility in 2019, a new club in Yelm in partnership with the City of Yelm and Yelm Community Schools.  Also added in 2019 was a new Teen Center at the Tenino club.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County serves some 600 students each year at clubs it operates in Lacey, Olympia, Rochester, Tenino, Tumwater and Yelm.  More information is available at http://bgctc.org/
