Tumwater is looking for a firm to design its new community center, said Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Denney during their commission’s meeting yesterday, October 19.

The city has already issued a request for qualification (RFQ) for firms interested in taking up the project on September 29. The submission deadline is tomorrow, October 21, with the committee aiming to select a firm on October 26.

The interviewing committee will consist of commission chair Erin Carrier, city administrator John Doan, and acity council memberl, according to Denney.

The RFQ stated that the community center addresses the city's lack of indoor recreation facilities.

It is expected to house the existing senior center program and generate revenue to cover the cost of its operation. The facility will likely contain spaces to support sports, dance, performance, child care, arts, classes, meetings, and special events.

According to the documents the committee prepared, the development of a community center was approved when the Tumwater Metropolitan Parks District (MPD) was created. The MPD was authorized to collect $0.75 in taxes per $1,000 assessed valuation. The first $0.45 will be used to fund park maintenance and new park facilities, while the remaining $0.30 will be used for the construction of the community center.
