Tumwater is seeking candidates for appointment to serve as Councilmember

The City of Tumwater is seeking candidates for appointment to serve as Councilmember for Council Position No. 2.

This position is vacant following the resignation of Councilmember Tom Oliva, effective February 17, 2021. The term of this appointment is effective until the next general election on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Service as a Councilmember requires attendance at numerous regularly scheduled and special meetings, which occur in the City during the evenings, on weekends, and during the weekday. Councilmembers also serve on Council committees, regional boards and commissions, and represent the City Council at various community functions.

To qualify, a candidate must be:

  • a current registered Tumwater voter,
  • a current resident of Tumwater, and
  • a resident of Tumwater for at least 12 months preceding the temporary appointment expected to occur March 23, 2021.

Interested candidates must submit:

  • a completed Application for Tumwater City Council Position No. 2
  • a cover letter indicating interest in and general qualifications for the position, and
  • a resume of no more than two pages in length.

Applications and supplemental information may be submitted by email to Deputy City Clerk Hanna Miles, or mailed to Tumwater City Hall, 555 Israel Road SW, Tumwater, WA 98501. Completed applications and supplemental information may also be dropped off at the Tumwater Police Department during regular business hours. Postmarks and late applications will not be accepted.

Deadline to apply is 12 noon, Friday, March 12, 2021.

Tumwater City Council to fill vacancy by appointment Candidate applications and supplemental information will be routed to City Councilmembers and the Mayor for review. All documents are public information. Candidate qualifications will be discussed at the Tuesday, March 16, 2021, regular meeting of the Tumwater City Council.

Candidate interviews will be held Saturday, March 20, 2021, at a special meeting of the Tumwater City Council. Interview questions will be provided to the candidates at the meeting. Candidate interview scoring sheets will be provided to Councilmembers for optional use in ranking of the candidates. After interviews are completed, Councilmembers will confer about the candidates in open session. All documents are public information.

The City Council will appoint a new Councilmember by formal motion at the Tuesday, March 23, 2021, regular meeting of the Tumwater City Council. The newly-appointed Councilmember for Position No. 2 will be sworn in immediately following the appointment.
