Brad Medrud will be the director of the Tumwater’s community development department starting on June 2, Mayor Debbie Sullivan announced at a city council meeting on May 6.

The community development department plays a crucial role in the city’s growth as it oversees permitting, plan review, inspections, code enforcement, and long-range planning mainly through the city’s comprehensive plan.

Medrud currently serves as its deputy director and has worked for the city for nine years. He will replace Mike Matlock, who is retiring after serving as the department director for 35 years.

“Everyone who's worked with Brad … knows his abilities and his attitude. I do not know how I would have gone out and would have selected someone more qualified than Brad,” Sullivan said.

“It's hard to find talent like that, and we have so many talented staff members in the city. I'm always happy when we can move them into new leadership roles.”

According to a press release, Medrud’s goals include strengthening relationships in the community, improving permit reviews, implementing the 2025 comprehensive plan and habitat conservation plan, and updating the city’s development code.

The press release also mentioned the city needing to face the challenge of providing 9,000 housing units and 10,000 jobs over the next two decades.

“I will aim to bring clear and accurate information on building, development, and long-range planning so city leaders can make informed decisions,” Medrud said in the press release. He also highlighted the department’s role in balancing the community’s many goals and priorities.

Before joining the city, Medrud worked with the Washington State Department of Transportation, the City of SeaTac, and the consulting firm AHBL for planning, environmental, and development projects.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Pacific Lutheran University, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and an urban planning degree from the University of Washington.
