During the Tumwater School Board work session on Thursday, December 3, new operating protocols were discussed.

The purpose of operating protocols is to foster the success of the school district while maintaining the Board’s effectiveness and efficiency.

Specifically, the operating protocols focus on the Board’s responsibilities and individual cooperation, interaction, and communication with the community, and the commitment to objectivity--the ideal that all agenda items and corresponding discussions will transpire in a neutral and unbiased manner.

While the meeting mainly focused on the consideration of new operating protocols and adjustments due to COVID-19, the previous protocols were additionally reviewed for Board consideration.

The previous year’s protocol statement concerned the general commitment to “serving the students, parents, and community members and to providing a high quality public education,” as posted on the school district’s website.

This general focus will likely remain the same while specific protocols concerning responsibilities and community interaction will change. New protocols will also include points relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, specifically, maintaining the best interests of the students in a virtual/hybrid learning environment.

During a work session, action items are merely discussed and improved. These new protocols will be presented and further discussed at the official Board meeting next Thursday, December 10 at 6:00 pm.
