Tumwater to add Fire Prevention Officer II position

Posted

A new promotional role of a Fire Prevention Officer II is set to be added to the Tumwater Fire Department.

Chief Examiner James Trujillo discussed the details of the new role during the Tumwater Civil Service Commission meeting held February 21.

“Essentially, what it is doing is adding a new classification based on some business needs the fire department has. We are adding a new role of Fire Prevention Officer II,” Trujillo explained.

The agenda packet indicated that the recent change enables the expansion of additional Fire Inspection services and the expansion of public education to prevent fires.

The initiative was put together following the negotiations between the city and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 2409 about creating a pathway to improve Tumwater’s fire prevention services.

The General Statement of Duties states that the role involves:

     conducting field inspections and review plans under general supervision to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes and ordinances;

     overseeing the resolution of code violations through education and enforcement if necessary;

     providing community fire prevention educational programs;

     and coordinates fire investigation activities for the Department.
