Updating the Lacey utility boxes to highlight the slogan ‘To LIVE, LEARN, CREATE, and EARN’

Lacey’s General Government and Public Safety Committee held its regular meeting on October 25, to discuss the agenda on midtown utility box wraps, property retained by the police for 2022, and vandalism in city parks.

“A couple of our priorities beginning for 2020 were utility box traps and banners. From our recovery in the pandemic, we’re finally able to make progress on our utility box wraps,” Senior Planner Sarah Schelling said.

Box wraps are vinyl sheets placed over utility boxes for decoration and to protect the boxes from weather damage and wear and tear. They will be used on utility boxes around the city.

Schelling presented the box wraps' redesigned concept, showing full coverage from all sides of a box, with a view of the whole city, and photos from the community alongside the ‘live, learn, create, earn’ slogan.

“We have come up with a few designs for the utility boxes.  An aerial photo of the district, and then the graphic of the ‘Lacey Midtown, an Innovation District’ logo on it, some pictures to highlight what we want, ‘To LIVE, LEARN, CREATE, and EARN’," Schelling added. "We also included a QR code on the wrap and we expect the people to take a picture of that and interact with a webpage that has more information about Lacey midtown.”

Mayor Andy Ryder suggested that instead of showing random people on the ‘earn’ part, they must promote their local education institutions.

“On the ‘LEARN’ side, we should have one-- St. Martin’s university, and the other one should be SPSCC (South Puget Sound Community College) Lacey Campus. So we’re promoting these two learning institutions,” Ryder commented.

The boxes that would be wrapped are located in nine areas around the city. The redesigned concept is set to be realized before the end of this year.
