Public Launch of Olympia's Hidden Histories Walking Tours, October 7, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

October 7 is the public launch of Olympia's Hidden Histories, a series of self-guided walking tours (created by students and faculty at The Evergreen State College) that seek to make visible the natural and social histories of Washington state's capital city, revealing important connections to the rest of the world.  Each tour focuses on different layers of history along what was once the abundant Deschutes River Estuary, many of which have been erased over time from the general public memory. Listen Here: a Lunch Break Story Time for Adults, October 7, 12:10 p.m. - 12:50 p.m.

Corey Snow, professional audiobook narrator, and voice actor will entertain and inspire us with selections from the wide, wonderful world of short fiction. This month's story time is in the Olympia library meeting room. You can also register to receive a Zoom link if you prefer to attend virtually. This month, Corey will read a story from Kali Fajardo-Anstine's lauded collection "Sabrina & Corina". The reading is from 12:10-12:50, so you have time to sneak away from work and get back undetected! Click this link for more details.

Joel Gibson Jr. at Nicole's Bar, October 7, 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.

BLUE New Paintings on Wood by Susan Christian, October 7, 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.

It's time to gather and celebrate. Please join the grand opening of BLUE New Paintings on Wood, by Susan Christian at the LGM Studio Project in Olympia. The opening is on Friday, October 7, 5-9 PM. She will also have an artist talk on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 5 PM. Click this link for more details.

Arbor Day Celebration, October 8, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Each year, Olympia and its partners host a variety of Arbor Day events to celebrate its forests and join the community in planting new trees for future generations. Join them this year at Squaxin Park (formerly Priest Point Park) for the 2022 Arbor Day celebration! Look forward to the following: Kids' activities, Tree pruning demonstration, Ask-an-arborist booth, Native plant giveaway, Community-based resources, Ceremonial tree planting, Jay Butts "Friends of Trees" Award recognition, and more! Harvest Festival, October 8, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Come join Thurston Conservation District and friends as they celebrate the harvest and kick off its 75th anniversary. This family-friendly event will feature: Pie baking contest, Cider pressing, Soil test drop-off & information booth, Native Bulb & Seed Sale Pick-up, Kid's arts & crafts activities, Pumpkin decorating, Face painting, Food trucks, and Live music! Seattle's Smokey Brights at the Brotherhood Lounge, October 9, from 8:30 p.m.

Smokey Brights, from Seattle, is coming to Olympia for one night of disco/synth/folk rock to cap off another fantastic fall arts walk. Arrive around 8:30 p.m. to get a drink before the concert begins at 9. There will be no opening act, so come prepared to dance! At the door, a $5-10 recommended donation is encouraged. Indigenous Peoples' Day Celebration in Olympia, October 10, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Join the Squaxin Island Tribe and the City of Olympia on Monday, October 10, 2022 to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2022. It is a celebration that respects and celebrates Native American peoples as well as their history and customs. The Olympia City Council will also be joined by Squaxin Island Tribal Chairman Kris Peters on Tuesday, October 4, to discuss a proclamation to mark the October 10 holiday. The Future of Work Summit, October 12, 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The Thurston Chamber regularly asks business owners to share the challenges of doing business. This one-day event is open to the public. Jeffrey Connor-Naylor will keynote the Summit following breakout workshop sessions. Connor-Naylor is the Director at Business Leaders United (BLU) for Workforce Partnerships. BLU represents leaders from various industry sectors concerned about our nation's skills gap. Click this link for more details.

Phillip Kopczynski Comedy Night, October 13, from 6:30 p.m.

Phillip's energetic narrative draws in audiences for a quirky good time, always drawing from personal events and poorly thought-out beliefs. He's been spotted everywhere from Vancouver, BC to Orlando, FL. In 2018, he came in second place in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. His 2019 Drybar Special, Full Grown Man, has had over a million views, and his 2021 Comedy Dynamics special, Live at the Spokane Comedy Club, has been seen by hundreds of convicts.  Click this link for more details.

Tumwater Marching Band Festival, October 14, from 8:30 a.m.

An annual competition for marching bands from all around the Pacific Northwest is held at the Tumwater Marching Band Festival. The event takes place at Tumwater Stadium on the second Saturday in October (on the grounds of Tumwater High school). It's been 15 years since they last held a tournament.     Correction: The Tumwater Marching Band Festival is October 8 (not the 14th - which is the date for 2023). I hope some of you can make it!
