Yesterday, the Olympia City Council approved the clean-up of the Wheeler Avenue homeless encampment, a property which has is considered a state-owned right of way.
During its regular council meeting on Tue., Jan. 11, Assistant City Manager Keith Stahley shared that the city plans to remove the homeless encampment along Wheeler Avenue SE. “This is an important first step in reducing the number of people living in our right of way,” the assistant city manager said.
Stahley noted that the city had partnered with the Washington State Department of Transportation to facilitate the clean-up. In turn, the state department also provided a $200,000 budget to address the site clean-up and remove solid wastes in the area.
In addition, these resources will be used to assist individuals who are living in the encampment. Stahley believed that these resources can help unhoused individuals to make a transition to permanent supportive housing.
When asked for the timeline, the assistant city manager shared that they plan to move forward with the clean-up sometime around April or May of 2022.
