Tumwater Tree Board shares the process for applying for heritage trees

Posted

Over the years there have been increasing concerns about the preservation of trees in the city, which is why the Tumwater Tree Board shared the process of designating heritage trees during its regular board meeting yesterday.

Heritage trees may be designated by the following classification:

  • Historical - trees which bear a historical significance by virtue of its age, or through association to a historical place, structure or event.
  • Specimen - trees that are unique to Tumwater or the state.
  • Rare - trees that are unusual in terms of form, or species
  • Significant - grove- rows or groups of trees which have a significant impact on the landscape

Once the board approves its designation, the tree will be added to the city’s inventory and public works map. The city would also conduct an annual tree health and care inspection for those that are considered as heritage trees. The city may also provide a plaque which lists the owner’s name, the tree’s species, and its location.

Most importantly, heritage trees cannot be cut down without a tree removal permit and must undergo the evaluation of a professional. A heritage tree may be exempted from the removal permit once experts were able to determine that it imposes a danger to the safety of the community.

During the meeting, the board also held a briefing for the update on the Urban Forestry Amendments which provides guidelines for street trees.

Nominate a Heritage Tree

Generally, heritage trees can be nominated by any Tumwater resident, the tree board or city staff. Residents who wish to nominate a tree must submit an application to the community development department.

The application includes a description of the tree, its location as well as the landowner’s name and contact information. In addition, the application must be signed by both the landowner and the individual who is nominating the said tree.
