Those who pay property taxes are going to be outvoted by those who do not. It’s easy to carelessly spend other people’s money. The last thing we need is another tax mechanism thinly veiled as a fire “benefit charge”. We paid $74.5M last year for mostly empty buses to drive around all day. Maybe we should take some or all of Intercity Transit’s budget and repurpose it to our fire departments.
Give $50M/yr to the two fire departments… plenty to bring Olympia and Tumwater in line with or to exceed Lacey’s fire budget. AND you still have $24.5M left over to buy over a million local ride-share (Uber/Lyft) rides for people who need help with transportation.
