I’ve always dug in bone meal and slow release tomato food very deep. By the time my tomatoes need food the roots have reached their food source. Even watering is also important.
One trick I learned to extend my growing season is to plant a second small batch of new mature tomato plants in the sunniest spot in the garden through black plastic in August. Unless the fall weather is unusually cool, it’s possible to get a second crop of tomatoes well into October.
