I think you are being a little harsh on President Lincoln's intentions. Yes -- his fight was to preserve the concept of self-governance, that no issue was more important than the states remaining as one nation. But ending slavery was at the front of his political career all along. I also think you are being a little too kind to Juneteenth as a public holiday. Progress towards eliminating race as a concern in any regard is not made by institutionalizing a localized celebration that really didn't change anything for anyone -- particularly in Texas. Juneteenth is irrelevant to every racial minority in America but one. The healthy future ahead is sharing our commonalities and opportunities.
