The Evergreen State College announced a $1 million gift from an anonymous alumnus donor.
The contribution will be disbursed over the next five years and "will directly support student success by funding scholarships and vital student services," said Interim Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications Genevieve Canceko Chan in an email to The JOLT News.
The money will be used to fund the college’s Basic Needs Center and for scholarships for students of the Native Pathways Program and Evergreen Tacoma throughout the academic year 2024-25.
“The donor selected these three initiatives to help reduce barriers to graduation and support students who are making a positive impact in their communities,” Chan said.
The college’s Basic Needs Center makes necessities more accessible to students. The center provides housing, food, clothing and hygiene products, as well as community resources for free to students.
The center also refers students to tailored referrals and advocacy for regional community resources.
Located in the historic Hilltop neighborhood, Evergreen Tacoma offers a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity, innovation and community engagement. The program was formally established in 1982.
Evergreen Tacoma gave Tacoma residents leadership skills. Longtime Tacoma resident and Evergreen faculty member Dr. Maxine Mimms founded the Tacoma program in her home in 1972.
Evergreen’s Native Pathways Program teaches students how to see Indigenous and western thought and practices through an Indigenous lens.
Chan wrote that the program uses a cohort model of learning, with works written or created by Indigenous authors and scholars, engages in place-based learning that tells the stories of the land, and structures lessons centered on Indigenous cultural knowledge.
“We are incredibly grateful for this gift, which will have a lasting impact on our students and the broader community,” said Dr. John Carmichael, The Evergreen State College President, stated in the email.
“These funds allow the college to address immediate student needs and help remove barriers to higher education, proving once again that Evergreen is for everyone.”
This gift is said to be a part of The Evergreen State College’s Foundation’s current efforts to empower students and support innovative, community-based education.

I wonder what will happen if the legislature passes the bill to eliminate TESC and make it an extension of UW for medical assistant training. Bill 5424.

Class act and true philanthropy (as opposed to the self-aggrandizing donations when the donor wants a quid pro quo - recognition and maybe a building in his or her name)
