The Olympia City Council approved 10 new traffic box wrap designs, which showcase local artistic talent from the region.
For this year, the traffic box project received 90 applications. Engage Olympia had 1,439 respondents participate in the voting process. Each voter had three votes.
This project is an invitation to artists to submit their proposals that would turn traffic boxes found on sidewalks and street corners into a collection of public art pieces.
As part of the process, the artwork submitted was considered for a public vote. The top 10 images with the most votes are printed as vinyl canvases and installed on traffic boxes around town.
The Top 10 artworks were reviewed by the Olympia Arts Commission on June 12.
Kathy Dorgan, the commission chair, presented the artworks with the most votes:
Mayor Pro Tem Yen Huynh suggested expanding the project's reach by creating stickers, stationery or other merchandise featuring the artwork.
Johnson indicated the commission would explore the possibilities, potentially offering future opportunities for residents to own prints or reproductions.
The selected artworks will be installed on traffic boxes throughout Olympia in late summer.
