UPDATED 8/11/21 -- After allegedly setting a fire and attacking the Olympia firefighters who worked to stop it, a Lakewood man stole a gallon of motor oil and drained it on the sidewalk, on Sun., Aug. 8.

Fernando Cortez Faust, 30, of Lakewood, was witnessed at about 1:40 p.m. by two reporting parties as he attempted to pile garbage and debris in a large pile to “feed” it and make it “grow bigger” according to the Olympia police report.

The store manager of Joann’s Fabric, at the 2700 block of Harrison Ave NW, went behind the building where the fire was located in an attempt to stop it.

Joined by the Olympia fire department, they confronted Faust, who said “yes, I lit that shit” and began swinging a leather belt “wildly” over his head and advancing to the responding OFD units.

Faust left the scene as Olympia police officers arrived. He allegedly went into the AutoZone store at 2315 Harrison Ave NW, stole a gallon of motor oil, and was witnessed by police dumping the contents of the bottle onto the sidewalk.

When police attempted to contact him, Faust identified himself as "Lord God Almighty" and yelled unintelligible statements," according to police. In response to police commands, Faust said “fuck you” and attempted to charge at officers, then began swinging his belt. Faust was told again to stop. He told officers, “I’m not going to fucking stop.”

Faust was warned several times that he would be tasered, but continued to move in an aggressive manner toward the officers. Faust replied “Fuck you, I’m not stopping.”

Faust was then tasered after five or six warnings.

Faust was booked into the Olympia city jail for reckless burning and larceny.
