The Lacey Police Department (LPD) has opened its application period for the fall Community Academy, a six-week course that walks participants through police operations, enforcement and investigations.

LPD made the announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Classes are scheduled for Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 30, Oct. 7, Oct. 14, Oct. 21, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. Applicants must be available for all six sessions. Applications are due no later than midnight on Sept. 7.

The academy covers hiring, criminal law, community outreach, firearms, less-lethal tools, traffic enforcement, SWAT, detective work and evidence processing. Participants also get hands-on experience with defensive tactics, mock scenes and emergency driving exercises.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and live, work or attend school in Lacey. Applicants cannot have felony convictions, pending criminal cases or outstanding warrants, and must sign course waivers.

LPD relaunched the Community Academy in 2022 after a hiatus of more than 10 years. The department says the program strengthens its relationship with community members and increases transparency by giving participants access to information about police facilities, training and practices.

LPD also views community participation as part of its effort to identify and respond to emerging public safety issues in Lacey.
