Late in the evening on March 29, a Thurston County Jail inmate assaulted another inmate, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) police report, Luke S. McGuire attacked fellow inmate Richard L. Delatorre without warning or cause.

In the jail’s CCTV footage, TCSO reported, it was seen that at 10:30 PM, the victim was sitting in his bed when the suspect attacked him.

“I watched as McGuire punched Delatorre indiscriminately in the head and body. At one point, Delatorre stands up and attempts to get away from McGuire but McGuire continues the attack until action was taken by Corrections Deputies,” the responding deputy stated in the police report.

The victim required immediate medical attention and was rushed to Capital Medical Center, where doctors discovered a lacerated spleen, necessitating emergency surgery. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for the surgery.

“Delatorre as of the writing of this report has received 5 bags of blood and has life-threatening, internal injuries,” stated an officer in the police report.

The suspect refused to talk with authorities, offering no explanation for his actions.

The suspect was rebooked into Thurston County Jail on charges of first-degree assault.

Richard Delatorre is a *** offender. It was only a matter of time before the other inmates found out and someone took matters in their own hands. This is why *** offenders are segregated for their protection. Ricky Delatorre was beaten for being a *** offender. Nobody has offered an explanation why he was left unprotected. He served his time a long time ago, this was cruel.
