The Olympia Municipal Court is forming a Community Court Advisory Committee to enhance its efforts in addressing the root causes of misdemeanor crimes.
This initiative offers Olympia residents a unique opportunity to help shape a program aimed at creating lasting positive change for individuals and the community.
Community Court provides an alternative approach to traditional court processes by focusing on accountability and support. This is an evidence-based structure designed to decrease crime and increase community well-being.
Participants are required to complete personal and community restorative goals and are held accountable to their program by a team of Court staff.
As participants progress, they connect with services, such as counseling, housing assistance, social services and job training. The program is designed to address issues, such as houselessness, mental health challenges and substance use disorders, which often contribute to criminal behavior.
The new advisory committee will play an essential role in ensuring the program reflects Olympia’s values and priorities. Members will offer feedback, provide guidance, and foster stronger connections between the Court and the community.
“The advisory committee will help inform the progress of Community Court by bringing diverse perspectives to the table,” said Rowanne Fairchild, Community Court Coordinator.
“We want to ensure the program remains effective and responsive to the needs of Olympia residents.”
The court is seeking committee members from a variety of backgrounds, including business leaders, service providers and community partners based in Olympia. No prior experience with the justice system is required, but interested parties should have a strong interest in supporting restorative justice and public safety initiatives.
To introduce the Advisory Committee and answer questions, the court will host a lunchtime informational Zoom meeting at the end of January. This session will provide an overview of Community Court and outline the responsibilities of committee members.
Serving on the advisory committee requires a minimal time commitment and offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the success of a program that promotes accountability, reduces recidivism and helps individuals rebuild their lives.
Community Court is more than an alternative to traditional justice. It is a program grounded in collaboration and a shared commitment to creating a safer, more compassionate Olympia. The Advisory Committee will be a vital part of the program’s continued growth and success.
