Chief Leschi's birthday memorial walk

Posted

On Jan. 27, Chief Leschi's birthday - there will be a walk from the spot of the marker noting his hanging to Ft. Steilacoom Park, where additional interpretation is planned about Leschi. The Medicine River Ranch will have some horses participating and the walk will be about 1.3 miles to the rear parking lot where an interpretive walk will start in the future.

During the 1855 Puget Sound Indian-Settler War, Leschi commanded the warriors of the Nisqually, Puyallup, and upper Duwamish tribes. An annual walk is held to honor him.

Assembly will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 8107 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood, WA 98498 with some brief remarks with the walk commencing at 11 a.m. The city of Lakewood is assisting as well as Nisqually law enforcement with traffic safety as one crossing will be required.

CJ will have snacks. The public is invited to help spread education about the Leschi story by participating, including his exoneration in 2004.

This walk will be part of many anniversaries related to the Medicine Creek Treaty as we come to 2024, including the 50th anniversary of the Boldt Decision, the 120-year anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act, and the 170th anniversary of the signing of the Medicine Creek Treaty. #MedicineCreekMemorial24 #MCM24
