Local government offices closed on June 19 in honor of Juneteenth

Posted

Local government offices will be closed in the cities of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater, as well as Thurston County, in recognition of Juneteenth on Thursday, June 19.

Then-President Joe Biden signed a bill into law on June 17, 2021, that established Juneteenth as the 12th federal holiday.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day in which Union soliders arrived to announce the news of freedom for enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas.

The announcement came more than two years after former President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
