The City of Lacey honored Joint Animal Services (JAS) staff as part of Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week, which takes place in the second full week of April every year.
City Manager Rick Walk recognized animal control officers for responding to animal-related calls, rescuing injured and sick animals, investigating cruelty cases, and supporting local law enforcement. The officers serve Thurston County, including Lacey and surrounding communities.
"Our Animal Control Officers play an important role in protecting public safety and caring for animals in our community," said Walk in a statement issued on Thursday, April 16.
Walk also credited the work of shelter staff and volunteers who coordinate adoptions, reunite pets with owners and handle administrative operations.
"Much of this work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt throughout our community," Walk said. "We are grateful for the compassion, professionalism, and commitment to public service shown by the entire Joint Animal Services team."
JAS is also accepting applications for its Animal Cruelty Response Volunteer and Foster Program through May 10, the only recruitment window for the program in 2026.
The program seeks community members willing to assist with cruelty investigations or provide temporary housing for animals in recovery.
Selected participants will undergo specialized training that covers cruelty investigations, scene photography, field safety and animal care and rehabilitation.
"Whether you're interested in hands-on field work or opening your home to an animal in recovery, this program offers a meaningful way to get involved and make a difference in the community," the agency said.
Applications are available on here. Inquiries may be directed to Shelter@JointAnimalServices.org.

I adopted my Siberian Husky ***** from JAS. She was a hard dog to place due to her being an accomplished escape artist and an efficient & enthusiastic killer of chickens & other small critters. JAS staff were upfront with her problems and went to some length to be sure I understood what I was getting into and that I could provide her a safe home. That was 5 years ago. She continues to bring joy to my life. Bailing her out of Doggie jail is among the best things I have ever done.
If you feel the need to have an animal companion, be that a dog, cat or maybe something else, JAS has exactly what you are looking for.

The 5 asterisks replace the accurate word for a female dog, not my potty mouth
