The City of Olympia is encouraging residents to aerate their lawns this fall by offering a free lawn aerator rental program when at least three neighbors agree to participate together.
Lawn aeration involves punching small holes into the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass. City officials say the practice can help grass grow stronger, while also reducing stormwater runoff that carries trash into local waterways.
According to the city, benefits of aeration include less soil compaction, improved drainage, thicker grass and reduced thatch buildup. Aeration also helps rainwater soak into the ground instead of flowing into streets and storm drains.
The program covers the cost of a one-day lawn aerator rental. Interested residents can apply by filling out a waiver and application form.
The program is open to the City of Olympia Utility customers only.
