Public works department to be split into two new departments

Posted

TUMWATER –– The Tumwater City Council is expected to approve two current city employees moving into new roles with the city government on Tuesday night, Aug. 4.

The City of Tumwater’s public works department, a staple of the city’s government, is splitting up into two new ones –– the transportation & engineering department and the water resources & sustainability department. The move was announced in a press release from city officials this month.

Two current city employees will head up the new departments. Current City Engineer Brandon Hicks will be the new transportation & engineering department director, while current Water Resources Manager Dan Smith will lead the new water resources & sustainability department.

Hicks was previously employed with Thurston County Public Works, private firm Material Testing and Consulting, Lewis County Public Works, and is a licensed professional engineer. On joining as the director, his guidance will help the new department focus on all aspects of transportation from streets and cover non-motorized transportation to planning and operations. Engineering staff will design, manage, and inspect capital construction projects across the city, including transportation, utilities, and parks.

Smith serves as the current Tumwater Rotary President, vice chair of the Family Support Center of South Sound, and is former president of Budd Bay Rugby. In his new role with water resources & sustainability, he will lead a department that provides city water, sewer, stormwater utilities, planning and operations.

The meeting is scheduled for Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. For more information about the meeting, including to find login information for the virtual meeting, please visit the city’s website
