Civil Service Commission to decide on police officer and firefighter hires

The Civil Service Commission will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 19, to review and decide on the approval of new hires for the Olympia Police Department and Olympia Fire Department.

The police department hire is for an entry level police officer, while the fire department hire is for a lateral firefighter.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room 112 at Olympia City Hall. 

The lateral firefighter register for the position lists two candidates: one with a score of 80.00% and the other with 79.17%. Both candidates are eligible until July 16, 2026.

Data from the selection process shows out of 38 applicants, 23 were invited to interview. After going through several hiring phases, two candidates remained on the register. 

The entry level police officer register for the position, includes seven candidates. The top-ranked applicant scored 90.33%, while the lowest-ranked applicant on the list scored 76.38%. 

 If approved, the Olympia Police Department and Olympia Fire Department would be able to hire the candidates on the register to fill vacancies.
